Meet Laura: Conservationist, Caregiver, and turning the impossible to possible

Woman walks in mountains

As a conservationist, I've spent my adult life in the mountains. Until I became a mother of two and the full-time caregiver to my brother.

I was raised by a single mother who raised my brother and me. My brother has special needs and is unable to live independently. Two years ago, after the death of my mother, I became my 43-year-old brother’s full-time caregiver. At the time, I was six months pregnant with my second child.

To be honest, I don't know how I did it. And my biggest challenge is not actually what is on my plate: it's asking for help.

I watched my mom do it alone my whole life. Why is it so hard for me? I should be able to do this, I have a spouse and a community.

But soon the responsibilities began taking a toll on my health, my marriage, and my work. I knew I had to begin looking for a more sustainable plan and longer-term care options for my brother.

Then I found Sam. When I started working with a caregiving Expert, I wasn't sure what to expect. But I was met with understanding, real-know-how in navigating the system, and a true partner. My guilt was met with reassurance and compassion. An impossible situation began to feel possible.

"I wish I would have done it sooner."

This is what I tell other women.

This past fall, my husband and I moved my brother into a group home two miles from our house. He is really happy and, for the first time in his life, has friends. And I am really looking forward to getting back to my special place: the Eastern Sierras.

Sam was my mom's name. She definitely had her hand in this.
